A mother from Mason, Ohio, in the United States is now facing criminal charges after she accidentally left her baby in the car for 9 hours, causing the baby to die from heat stroke.

She was running late for work

The mother, Karen Osorio-Martinez, a research scientist, was supposed to drop off her 15-month-old baby at the daycare before going to work. But according to a search affidavit, she was running late for work, and forgot to drop her kid off at the daycare.

Her daughter, Sofia was left alone in the car for 9 hours before she had realized that she forgot to leave her child at the daycare.

She immediately called 911 when she had realized her mistake, after finding out from her husband, who was supposed to pick up their daughter, that the baby wasn't at the daycare.

According to the autopsy, the 15-month-old died from heat-related causes, which is common among children who are left alone inside vehicles. A prosecutor said that depending on the results of the police investigation, charges might be filed against the child's mother because of what happened.

Never leave your children unattended

Incidents like these highlight the importance of always knowing where your children are. It's important to never leave your kids unattended, especially inside a vehicle, since it's so easy to forget that you have a child with you, especially if you're preoccupied with something else.

Parents should know where their children are at all times, especially for babies, since they are unable to call for help or grab anyone's attention if they're in distress. Presence of mind is very important when you're with your kids, as a moment of neglect can potentially be fatal for your little one.
