Steer clear of raw food and unpasteurized cheeses, alcohol, and on the beauty front, some products that may contain harmful ingredients. It doesn’t mean you have to toss your whole beauty regime, though.

While it is prudent to take precautions when using different skincare essentials while you have a bun in the oven, there are other beauty products for pregnant women that are perfectly safe for you and your little one.

As with most things when you’re pregnant, it’s best to discuss your skincare and beauty products with your doctor. There are also databases you can check to make sure the products you’re using are safe.

Check out the Environmental Working Group’s databse. If you want to research further, read the US FDA website’s article on cosmetics and pregnancy.

Choosing beauty products

Before we delve into what beauty must-haves you can enjoy, let’s list down what you should avoid first. For starters, avoid those with phthalates which can disrupt hormones and hamper the fetus’s development. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, parabens and triclosan are also a no-no because they can also affect the baby inside you.

  • Ingredients
    • Make sure you start reading the label. Check to see if it contains harmful ingredients like the ones mentioned above.
  • Fragrance
    • Some scents can make pregnant ladies nauseous so it would be better to get the fragrance-free kind if there’s any.

It would also be best to consult your doctor first before trying anything new. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when you’re preggo.
