If you feel like that your intimate life leaves much to be desired, then maybe you can consider going through a sex detox. A sex detox is a period of abstinence, where a couple doesn’t engage in any sexual activity for a certain period of, let’s say, a month.

Bestselling author Ian Kerner, Ph.D. writes in his book entitled Sex Detox how a 30-day fasting from sex or abstinence period can revive and rejuvenate a person’s love life. In his book he explores cases where couples experience low sexual desire, different libidos, boredom, sexual trauma and other common sex problems. As a result, couples struggled with infidelity or porn addiction. Instead of throwing in the towel, Kerner believes that trying something radical can save a couple’s sex life.

Here are some good reasons to undergo a sex detox.

1. It can help you stop taking your partner for granted

We often want what you can’t have, so keeping sex off the table makes it all the more desirable. In addition, you will begin to see your partner in a whole new light. If you’ve been taking them for granted, this can push you to see just how much you desired them in the first place. It will make you reminisce about how good it feels to touch and kiss them. It will also help you see the beauty in the little things they do for you.

2. It can help strengthen other parts of your love life

Not only will a sex detox make you look forward to the time when you can have sex again, making it all the more passionate and exciting, it will encourage you to strengthen other areas of intimacy, like your emotional connection. Often, sex becomes lackluster when you feel disconnected from your partner. Not engaging in sex will help you refocus your energy and attention on areas you need to work on. Can you perhaps be more sensitive to your partner’s needs? Do you need to be more willing to please them in more selfless ways? Do you need to be more considerate of their feelings?

3. Intimacy will become much more meaningful

Going without sex can help you see just how essential it is to being connected, but also how other ways to be intimate matter just as much. Talking about your fears, concerns, and anxieties helps you connect in a deeper way and it also elevates intimacy to a level where it goes beyond the physical expressions of love. Once you’re sex detox is done, sex will take on a whole new meaning. Yes, it will still be physical satisfying, but it will be also be emotionally and psychologically rewarding.
