Beauty procedures and treatments are now very common these days. We also have heard about those procedures that have, unfortunately, gone wrong. A recent death involving a young Malaysian woman is yet another reminder of the importance of doing proper research and being very careful when it comes to deciding to undergo any form of treatments.

In wanting to lose weight so that she could look her best during her wedding, Coco Siew Zhi Shing reportedly underwent a liposuction procedure at a beauty salon in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. However, things went wrong while getting the procedure and the 23-year-old passed away on Saturday (Oct 17).

Found Beauty Salon Online

Siew found the beauty salon online while she was browsing the Internet for liposuction-related treatments, her brother Xiao Mingan told Sin Chew Daily.

The bride-to-be also signed up for a RM2,500 (S$820) procedure to extract fat from her arms, he said.

According to local media, Siew visited the beauty salon on Saturday afternoon with a friend for the first time.

She was said to have received an injection for anaesthesia upon arrival. However, about half an hour later, Siew reportedly started to feel unwell. And about an hour later, the 23-year-old’s heartbeat stopped.

While Siew was rushed to the hospital, she failed to be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at around 5pm that day.

Xiao said that the owner of the beauty salon did not appear at the hospital until 8pm. The owner was also not present during the procedure.

According to reports from The Star newspaper, the beauty salon was run by two owners—a woman and her daughter.

Further questioning by Xiao to the beauty salon’s person-in-charge revealed that they were not licensed to perform such medical procedures but only normal beauty treatments.

In addition, Xiao told Sin Chew Daily that the beautician who performed the liposuction on his sister did not have a professional license.

The cause of Siew’s death has yet to be established. Malaysian police are investigating the death and have detained the owners of the beauty salon.

According to Xiao, Siew took great pride in her health and appearance. He said that she also came in first place in an Asian modelling competition in 2014.
