Freddie Litaoen, a resident of Santol, La Union was simply looking for his wife, who he suspected had run away with her lover, when he accidentally uncovered a marijuana plantation somewhere along the border of Barangay Sapdaan, Santol, La Union, at Barangay Mocgao, Kibungan, Benguet.

Barangay captain Milando Amiao told ABS-CBN news that Freddie had previously informed him about his marital problems and his plans to confirm his suspicions about his wife, who was nowhere to be found.

Having his suspicions about who his wife’s lover was, he found himself in the said barangay. He maintains that he had no prior knowledge about the plantation. According to reports, an identification card belonging to Rufino Lagade, a resident of Barangay Badeo, Kibungan, Benguet was found in a shed at the plantation. Lagada is one of former drug users who surrendered in the vicinity.

“Nakita namin sila—iyong babae at iyong lalaki. Ang galing din nung planters. Hindi pa kami masyadong nakatuntong sa kanya, tumahol iyong aso. Ang nangyari, pinaputukan kami. Nakatakas, pero identified kasi naiwan yung cedula at ID,”  Police Chief Inspector Danilo Ligayo told ABS-CBN news.

They estimate the plant to be 1,600 square meters, containing marijuana which amounts to about P8.87 million.

Authorities also found dried stems of marijuana plants hidden under rocks, which means they were just about to be sold prior to the discovery of the plantation.

Once proven that Lagade is linked to the crime, he can be charged with violating Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. Litaoen’s wife will reportedly be charged with adultery.
