According to a report by DZBB Super Radyo, a Chikungunya outbreak has been declared in the province of Indang, Cavite.
This was confirmed after over 400 cases of the disease were confirmed so far in 2016 in Cavite, specifically in the Indang area.
Department of Health Spokesperson Eric Tayag stated in an interview with DZBBthat the same type of mosquito, Aedes Egypti, which carries Dengue and Zika also carries Chikungunya. However, he reassured the public that Chikungunya is not as life threatening as dengue, but it is still cause for concern.
The World Health Organization decribes the infection as being “characterized by an abrupt onset of fever frequently accompanied by joint pain.”
The joint pain can cause discomfort for days, weeks, and even, years. Aside from this, however, other symptoms include headache, fatigue, rash, and muscle pain.
Although most patients make a full recovery, there have been various reported complications.
Some “occasional complications”, according to the WHO, include eye, heart, neurological, and gastrointestinal complications.
There is no known cure for Chinkungunya and treatment is mostly directed at alleviating its symptoms.
