Imagine yourself going on a leisurely drive, when all of a sudden, the driver passes out and you suddenly had to take control of the vehicle? That’s exactly what happened to Jackie Porter when her husband, Michael, suddenly collapsed while driving their car.
“It was over so quickly”
Michael Porter and his family were on their way home from a wedding over the weekend when he suddenly collapsed on the wheel. Her wife and one of her daughters, Lydia, had to move quickly and take control of their vehicle.
According to Jackie, “I leaned over and tried to steer, but the car veered to the right. I remember shouting, ‘Help me’ and Lydia undoing her seat belt, and together we tried to keep the car on the road. There was a bang, when we must have hit a barrier, and the car started to roll. It was over so quickly.”
Thankfully, a police officer nearby was quickly alerted to the accident. Mrs Porter and her eldest daughter Lydia were able to climb out of the wreckage, but her other daughter Evie was trapped. However, she was quickly freed by emergency services.
A family man
Sadly, emergency services were not able to save Mr. Porter’s life.
According to Mrs. Porter, “No one would tell me much until I got to hospital. I don’t think they wanted to worry me. This has destroyed us. We are absolutely numbed by what has happened.”
Mr. Porter was a very dedicated and loving husband; he was a family man. His sister said that, Michael was a “good, all-round funny, lovely person. She adds, we are an incredibly close family and always have been. We will never be the same again.”
Mr. Porter’s mother also had only good things to say about him. “Such a wonderful little family has been ripped apart. Michael absolutely idolised those girls. They were all so brave. Michael would light the room up. His father says he has not only lost a son, he has lost his best friend.”
