“I’ve learned two things about TV. It’s always easier with vodka and some of the best singers are from the Philippines,” Ellen DeGeneres once tweeted some years back.

Filipinos have no doubt been a tough act to beat in many international singing competitions. Most recently, the world was once more blown away by the talent of a young Pinay.

Dianne Kaye Jacob Ico, a fourteen year old high school student, stunned judges and audiences alike, when she competed in Got Talent España, which airs on local television channel Telecinco.

Ico’s impressive performance of the song “Memory” from the musical production “Cats” earned her a golden buzzer from judge Jorge Javier, which allowed her to progress straight to the semi-finals of the singing competition.

We dare you not to get goosebumps as you watch a video of her performance:

According to Manila Coconuts, Ico was born and raised in Barcelona by her Filipino parents. Ico’s parents hail from Ilocos and Dagupan in the Philippines.

A report by Daniel Tuano on ABS-CBN said that Ico, who has had formal voice training for years, has taken part in various singing competitions in Barcelona, and was part of the Barcelona-based Kudyapi Children’s Choir, a group of Filipino children born in Barcelona.

Ico is not the first Filipino to make waves in the international music scene. Many Filipino singers, such as Charice Pempengco, have also been discovered through competitions and YouTube. Pempengco is best remembered for her rendition of the song “I will Always Love You”.
