Having garnered almost 16 million votes, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is set to be the next President of our country. Not everyone voted for him or agreed with his proposed changes, but when he becomes President, all citizens are duty-bound to recognize his authority.

Here are 5 promises he’s made that Pinoy parents should be aware of as early as now:

#1 Suppressing crime and drugs

The President-elect’s most popular campaign promise is the suppression of crime and drugs within 3 to 6 months of his term. How he will do it is still a question (building an Alcatraz-type of prison and re-imposing the death penalty have been suggested) but supporters are energized by his vision of a crime- and drug-free Philippines.

The presumptive President has also announced plans to implement certain Davao ordinances across the country. These ordinances have been credited for making the city cleaner and safer:

#2 Smoking ban. “This particular law or ordinance is not really intended to deprive you of your fix for the day, but [because] nicotine is a cancer-causing merchandise; I have to protect those who are not smoking,” he shared last December. Parents and soon-to-be-parents will definitely benefit from having smoke-free public spaces.

#3 Curfew. “The curfew is principally for minors, unescorted minors, past 10 p.m. It does not include minors with their parents or guardians. This is to make sure that our children are in their homes, sleeping already, preparing for the next day in school,” clarified spokesperson Peter Laviña. (No need to explain why you aren’t allowing your teen to stay out late with friends!)

#4 Liquor ban. Davaoeños explained that the liquor ban was enacted in their city to prevent drunk driving. Keeping motorists and pedestrians safe, parents and spouses whose family members need to be on the road at night will have one less thing to worry about.

Prim and proper

Those who were concerned about the way he conducted himself during the campaign period are offered relief. During a press conference held last May 9, Mayor Duterte vowed to be a prim and proper President. “I need to control my mouth. I cannot be bastos (vulgar) because I am representing our country,” he explained.

Last December though, he already said that he would temper his foul mouth and donate P1,000 to Caritas Davao for every cuss word.

There is no such thing as a perfect President, but every Filipino parent will benefit from and support leaders who are intent on keeping our families safe.
