What is Secondhand Smoke?

Secondhand smoke is the smoke that you inhale from another person’s cigarette. You might think you’re healthy because you eat well and avoid smoking cigarettes. However, in three separate studies conducted by U.S. researchers, it was discovered that secondhand smoke greatly affects the health of women and children.

What are the effect of secondhand smoke on children and you?

  • Inhaling secondhand smoke is like you yourself are smoking. It makes you at risk of getting lung cancer.
  • Secondhand smoke causes vascular changes in children and obese teens, making them candidates for heart disease when they are adults.
  • Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at risk of having pneumonia, coughing, bronchitis, and wheezing.
  • Women exposed to secondhand smoke for more than six hours a day, whether as a child or an adult, will have a hard time getting pregnant. If they do get pregnant, they will most likely suffer from miscarriage.

Just because you abstain from smoking does not mean that you are safe from having diseases related to smoking. Make sure you protect yourself and your whole family from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
