An alleged ‘sextortionist’ who threatened to share a woman’s nude photos online if she didn’t agree to have sex with him has been arrested during an entrapment operation in Cubao, Quezon City.
He threatened to release her nude photos online
‘Jenina’, the victim, said that the suspect, who was named ‘David Garcia’ on Facebook, initially told her that he had her nude photos, and threatened to share the photos with her friends if she did not have sex with him.
The victim then blocked Garcia on Facebook, since he was threatening her. However, the suspect got angry and sent the nude photos to the victim’s mother, who was working abroad.
Because of that, the victim sought the help of the PNP- Anti-Cybercrime Division, who set up an entrapment operation to corner the suspected ‘sextortionist’.
He obtained the photos from a group chat
Upon his arrest, the PNP found that ‘David Garcia’ was actually Regino Echas, a 24-year-old graphic artist living in Caloocan. The victim shared that Echas got the photos from a group chat online where both of them were members.
Echas will be facing charges of grave coercion, and violation of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 and Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009.
Teach your kids to be careful of what they share online
Social media has now been firmly established as a part of modern day life. Kids use social media to get in touch with their friends, and share their sentiments.
However, social media can also be used to abuse, bully, and in the case of the story above, threaten people. That’s why we need to teach our kids to be safe whenever they go online. Here are some tips:
- Teach them to never post anything private online.
- They should never give any personal information such as their address, or their phone number to people that they meet online.
- Let them know that anything they say or do online will be on the internet forever, so they should never say or do anything that they might regret down the line.
- Likewise, they should never threaten or bully someone that they meet online. Their behavior online should be the same as their behavior in the ‘real world’.
- Know the sites that your kids visit so that you can guide them accordingly and teach them what sites are safe, and what sites are not appropriate for their age.
