Family ends amazing 100-year streak of having only boysFamily ends amazing 100-year streak of having only boys

It's been over a century since the last time a member of this family had a baby girl!

  • The big question: How to conceive a baby girl naturally

“It’s a boy!”

That’s a phrase that the Underdahl family has rejoiced plenty over the past century or so. In fact, they’ve exclusively celebrated the birth of baby boys ever since 1914.

Amazingly, Scott and his lovely wife Ashton welcomed a baby girl named Aurelia on April 12. The family was shocked to find out they would be parents of a baby girl. In fact, Ashton told KREM news that she anticipated the streak continuing.

“I wasn’t mentally prepared for a girl,” she said in her interview with KREM.

Ashton recalls husband Scott being in shock for several days after hearing the news. In a separate interview with NBC-affiliate KHQ, Ashton says, ““He kept thinking, even though we were in the delivery room, he’s like, ‘What if they made a mistake and it’s been a boy all along?’”

Nevertheless, Ashton sees Aurelia as “pretty special” and a “miracle” to the family.

Baby Aurelia ends 101 years of male births in the family

According to local media sources, Aurelia’s birth on April 12, 2016 ended a four-generation record of seven male births in the Underdahl family living in Post Falls, Idaho.

While they were certain no girls had been born in the family for at least a generation or two, the couple was shocked to see how far the female drought dated back.

Scott says that his uncle Conrad had been combing through the family tree to trace back the last recorded birth of a female when he discovered it had been over 100 years! The last female birth recorded in the family was Aurelia’s great-aunt Bernice in 1914.

Scott and Ashton, before Aurelia’s birth, had been raising their son Asher (2) and had never thought about the idea of raising a girl. Now, they say they’re as excited as ever to explore the possibilities of having a daughter.

It took time to create perfection – Conrad

Obviously, 100 years is a long time to go without a female birth, but as Scott’s uncle Conrad says, “Maybe it took more than 100 years to create perfection.”

Aurelia Underdahl’s recent birth has clearly left the family overwhelmed and happy, breaking what had unintentionally become a tradition for the Underdalhs.

Aurelia has blonde hair, which is a strong Underdahl characteristic. She also got her grandfather Conrad’s nose. But what’s different is that Aurelia is quieter and more relaxed than the other babies – specifically boys – born in the Underdahl family. Her father says it himself, “She’s pretty quiet, so apparently girls are different than boys in our line,” Scott said.

There’s no doubt she’ll be getting the princess treatment from the entire Underdahl clan. “She’s a cutie. We’ve been spoiling her a bit because it’s just different finally holding a baby girl,” Uncle Conrad claims.

Hopefully, Aurelia’s birth ushers in a new wave of streak free births for the Underdahl family! For now, there’s no denying that her birth was something special for this family, and it can truly be said that it was one for the records!

The big question: how to conceive a baby girl naturally

The question mothers who only have sons might have in their minds is, how does one make a baby girl? Is there a specific diet, a trick, perhaps a prayer?

Read on for tips and studies on how to make a baby girl.

Is there a right diet?

As an expecting mom, it is given that one keeps a healthy diet. But it’s interesting to know that diets can influence the sex of your baby.

While there’s not much evidence for this yet, researches have been made on the influence of diet to the sex of your child.

The following food is suggested to improve your chances of conceiving a girl:

  • beans,
  • almonds, cashews, peanut butter
  • dark, leafy greens, broccoli, spinach, okra
  • seafood, especially sardines and canned salmon
  • berries, apples
  • citrus fruits
  • oats and oat bran, fortified breakfast cereals
  • dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt
  • eggs
  • seeds, like pumpkin, flax, and chia

Why these? Researchers have tried to study the link between maternal diet and natural sex selection. However, these studies were conducted on mammals such as cows and rats. Studies on humans are much needed to have stronger evidence.

Healthline has provided various studies supporting this claim.

First, according to a 2010 study, women who followed strict magnesium and calcium-rich diet (combined with intercourse timing) had a better chance of having a daughter.

Second, in a 2008 study, 740 women’s diets were examined, and it was discovered that mothers who consumed more calories had more males. Researchers hypothesized that there was a relationship between greater blood glucose levels and male sperm quality.

Although these findings require more research and evidence, it won’t hurt to increase your magnesium and calcium intake. Remember to avoid food high in sugar and consume more fiber, protein, and healthy fat too.

While there are no studies linking paternal diet to the sex of your baby yet, it is also vital for fathers to keep a healthy diet. Not for the influence of sex but to increase the likelihood of conception and promote a healthy sperm count.

How to make a baby girl – Shettles Method

Dr. Landrum Shettles created the Shettles technique in the 1950s. According to this strategy, you should have intercourse 2 to 4 days before ovulation to boost your chances of having a daughter. Thus, it is vital for you to keep track of your ovulation and menstrual calendar.

This approach is based on the idea that in acidic conditions, a girl sperm is stronger and lasts longer than a boy sperm. Only female sperm should be left by the time ovulation occurs.

Shallow penetration is also recommended by Shettles to give the girl sperm an advantage. Sperm can enter the female body at the vaginal opening, which is a more acidic environment.

According to Shettles, this method has a 75% success rate in producing a daughter. However, there is currently no scientific evidence to support the Shettles method.

How to conceive a baby girl naturally – Wellen Method

The Whelan Method by Elizabeth Whelan is similar to the Shettles method which uses timing and frequency of intercourse.

To conceive a girl, Whelan’s approach recommends having sex two or three days before ovulation or on the day of ovulation. Male and female sperm operate differently at different stages in a woman’s menstrual cycle, which is why timing is important.

At this time in the cycle, sperm with X chromosomes (female sperm) are more likely to fertilize an egg. As with the Shettles method, the girl sperm has a better chance of surviving when you have sex closer to ovulation or on ovulation day.

The Whelan method reports a success rate of 57%.

How to make a baby girl – Babydust method

The Babydust method is developed by Kathryn Taylor who also uses timing and frequency of intercourse to conceive a baby girl.

For three months before attempting to conceive, you’ll track your luteinizing hormone (LH) twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening.

A surge in this hormone suggests that ovulation will occur within the next 12 to 48 hours. You can better predict ovulation this way. It is vital to test at least twice a day to ensure accurate records.

The Babydust method recommends having intercourse two or three days before ovulation after tracking the hormone for three months. The goal is to give the girl sperm an advantage once more. The boy sperm will no longer be viable by the time the egg arrives.
