A lot of moms can feel overwhelmed from all of their responsibilities. Moms take care of the household, the kids, as well as their husbands. And when these things add up, it can leave moms feeling overwhelmed.
That’s why Mommy Madz, from the Mommy and More blog shares her tips on how to feel less overwhelmed as a mom!
How can moms avoid feeling overwhelmed?
Breathe
Mommy Madz shares that “sometimes, all we need to calm ourselves is to breathe, literally.”
Breathing exercises can help you calm down. It has also been scientifically proven to help you relax, so it’s also a good habit to pick up if you’re having trouble getting to sleep.
Whenever you feel overwhelmed, stressed out, or anxious, try sitting down and do some deep breathing exercises for about five minutes. It should help you relax and clear your mind. It also helps you deal with stress.
Change your mindset
In some cases, your own way of thinking might be causing you stress.
According to Mommy Madz, you need to learn to let go of “should haves, would haves, and could haves.” What this means is that moms should try to criticize themselves less, and not get too worked up about their perceived “mistakes.”
She also shares that moms should learn to “counter hot thoughts,” or thoughts that can trigger a strong emotional response. Madz shares that when moms feel overwhelmed, they tend to think negatively, which causes them to worry, or even panic.
Never underestimate the impact of positive thinking, and do your best to focus on what you’re doing right. Know that you’re trying to be the best mom that you can be.
Practice mindfulness
Being mindful is the habit of focusing on the “now,” or what’s happening in the present instead of the past or the future.
Mindfulness helps deal with feeling overwhelmed since it helps you focus your attention on the things that you should be doing. It helps you avoid unnecessary thoughts that might cause you anxiety, or might trigger a negative emotional response.
Learn to prioritize
Doing a lot of things all at the same time can really make you feel overwhelmed. Some people are able to multitask and do a lot of things at once to save time, but it’s not for everyone.
Mommy Madz shares, “When we keep switching tasks, we end up being distracted by the previous one, that our performance suffers.”
If you always find yourself multitasking but you end up not finishing your tasks, then try to prioritize. Make a list, and focus on one thing at a time. Doing so helps you handle your daily tasks better, and can make you feel less overwhelmed. You also get the satisfaction of knowing that you managed to finish all your tasks for that day.
Step away from what you’re doing
Moms can be busy, but that’s not an excuse to not give yourself some time to relax.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, go out for a walk, read a book for an hour, or watch some TV. Activities like that can help you calm down, and it relaxes your mind. Sometimes all you need to get back into the groove is to take a short break. You also need to take care of yourself if you want to be able to care for your family.
Talk to a loved one about it
Moms are amazing, but at the end of the day, they’re still human. This means that moms can also, sometimes, have a bad day.
In those situations, it’s important to talk to someone about your problems. That person could be your husband, your parents, your best friend, even your neighbors. Talking to someone and sharing your problems really does help, even if they’re unable to offer solutions. There are times when you just need to let some things out and share the things that are weighing heavy on your mind.
