Be it in singing or dancing, Filipinos have, time and time again, broken the mold. In recent weeks, two young Filipinas have again put the Philippines in the spotlight.

Esang De Torres

Based on her performances of Annie’s “Tomorrow” and Les Miserables’ “Castle on a Cloud”, nine-year-old Filipina child wonder Telesa “Esang” de Torres’ singing talent is undeniable.

This little girl with the big, powerful voice has been cast as one of the alternates of Filipino-Australian Chloe De Los Santos for the role of little Cosette in the Manila run of the classic Les Miserables. The story revolves around her character, who is left under the care of the Thénardier family while her mother works.

Cosette is abused by the family while Fantine, Cosette’s mother, is unaware of the troubled life Cosette is living with the Thénardiers. Cosette is later saved by Jean Valjean, a reformed ex-convict.

Les Miserables is showing at the Theatre at Solaire, and will run until May 1.

Esang, who has been dubbed Lea Salonga’s mini-me, first impressed her audience when she sang her rendition of Annie’s “Tomorrow” in a segment of the television show “It’s Showtime”.

But it is perhaps her participation in The Voice Kids Season 2 that ultimately shot her into fame. During auditions for the competition, Esang wowed the judges with her version of “Home” from the musical “The Wiz”.

Esang’s audition piece had all three judges turning their seats, but it was Lea Salonga whom Esang chose as her coach.
