What does your 3 year old should know by now?

There are certain skills and knowledge you should expect your children to have at this age. However, this list is just a guideline you can check, you must note that every child is different and every child learns at their own pace. Anytime, you can check with your doctor if you feel like your child is falling behind.

However, here are the things and skills you should look out for in what should a 3 year old know by now.

1. Physical Development

As the days go by, your not-so-little baby continues to grow bigger, taller, and stronger. Now they can do more activities without your help and develop more activities. You might still notice their love for showing off their newly required motor skills and coordination but just enjoy it and cheer them on.

The other skills they can physically do now is:

• Can steadily run and climb
•  Walk up and down the stairs with one foot each on each step without any help
•  Wash their own hands then dry them
• Jump around and hop using one foot
• Stocks more than 10 blocks of the tower
•  Use and pedal a bicycle (with extra wheels on the back for support)
• Can easily draw lines, figures, or circles
•  Use art materials such as scissors properly
• Can dress and undress by themselves (except laces and buttons)
• Can stand on tip-toes
• Properly use a spoon to eat by self

2. Cognitive Development

This development refers to the ability of how a child thinks and reason. This includes the language and speech development of a child.

Though every child is different and developed at their own pace, commonly at age 3, your baby can talk and be understood clearly by others. They can form and speak about 2 – 3 word sentences and gradually progress to 4 or 5 words.

A child’s brain at this point is like a sponge where it absorbs everything that is being taught to them. It is not just about learning the ABCs and numbers but the whole learning process.

Your child can now refer to himself as their own name and use simple phrases such as thank you, sorry, and please. They could also remember simple rhymes or lyrics of a song now and even sizes such as big and little.

In understanding, your baby could now understand long sentences and use proper sentences such as I, you, me, him, her, etc.

Aside from their growing curiosity about anything and everything and the constant question of why children at age three have developed many skills and their knowledge is much better and higher than the previous year. The other skills your baby can do now:

• They can now say their full name, gender, and age
• Can concentrate on tasks for about 10 minutes
• Able to say about 500 to 900 words
• Name colors and numbers
• Use tenses such as yesterday or today
• Can understand and use prepositions such as under, inside, beside, etc.
• Can understand and develop fears in things such as darkness or monsters
• Remember situations and events
• Tries to  solve small problems on their own
• Can play make-believe situations and makeup stories with other people and dolls
• Can already use toys with buttons and moving parts properly
• Can answer simple questions and point the correct answers

3. Social Development

As you already know, each person has their own unique personality and character, this also pertains to children. Your child has already started developing their own personality by this point and will continue to blossom to be their own person.

However, there are traits and skills that you must look out for in your children at this age. Securing this list could help you know your children’s development.

The other social skills your baby can do now:

• They already start to share with other kids and play with them. Their sense of ego-centrism when they are younger starts to dissipates
• Can now share their toys and take a turn playing with others
• Their temper tantrums appear less often than before or they could control them better
• Showing feelings in acceptable social ways
• They still copy what adults and other children do
• As they start to go to places such as daycare, they might experience sadness or  separation anxiety when their parents leave them there even if they like it
• They know already the concept of his, hers, and mine
• They start showing empathy to other people when they get hurt and even attempt to console them
• May already start being affectionate with other people without being told

4. Emotional Development

Though there might still be instances where your child gets meltdowns and tantrums, they will occur less often than before. By now they got better at following instructions and showing their emotions. You can see them be silly way more often with their antics and be more creative.

The other emotional skills your baby can do now:

• Your child starts to show their affection openly
• Already shows concern when people are upset and can show a wide range of feelings
• Can understand emotions and may express them by saying “I’m sad” or “I’m happy”
• As they got used to the routine, they can get upset when something big changes
• They like to help with tasks around and get happy when they did it.

Your child must really been a bright one! If you are wondering if your child is really gifted and is looking for more indicators aside from having a high IQ, here is a list you can check and it includes:

1. They are quick at learning new things. They tend to pick up quickly compared to other children
2. Uses big vocabulary at an earlier age
3. Exhibits a huge curiosity over everything and tend to ask a lot of question
4. They are always eager to learn.  They love to learn and absorb everything
5. Can read at an early age such as three including full chapter books
6. Has exceptional talent in art and is extremely creative
7. Have vivid imaginations in creating their own stories and identifying characters
8. Has advanced reasoning skills in rationalizing and arguing
9. Able to work on puzzles or patterns at an earlier age such as reading analog clocks and do multiplication
10. Has the ability to focus for a long period of time

If you want to formally know if your child is indeed gifted, you can have them tested when they entered school. Some educational institutions do their own specific assessment to enroll children in gifted classes.

When to be concerned about signs of delay

Mommies and daddies! Those are the list of skills and development of what should a 3 year old know. But always remember that every child if different, meaning that they develop at their own pace and have different rates in learning.

You should not compare your child to other kids about their capabilities and understand that they will get to certain development at their own pace.

However, if you think that there is a delay in your baby then do not hesitate to check on their doctor. There is a list of things that you should look for in case your children experience them. These are:

• Can’t and don’t speak in full sentences
• Doesn’t make eye contact
• Does not understand simple instructions
• Always falls down and having trouble going up and down the stairs
• Doesn’t want to play with others or even their toys
• Cannot do the skills they once have and gradually loses it
• Does not join in pretend play and make-believe stories
• Often drools and has the unclear speech pattern

Early signs of autism

You should also remember to make sure your child will be tested for autism within his 18th or 24th month. The common signs of autism in a 2 or 3-year-old child are:

• Unable to speak or have limited speech
• Have a hard time following simple instructions
• Have limited sounds and gestures
• Totally not interested in playing with others
• Do not use their things or toys properly, instead organizes it like lining them up
