Gretchen Barretto and friends criticized for viral video of them laughing at a mom in need

The video has been shared a lot online, but what really happened? Read on to know more.

When we hear about a stranger in need, we all react differently. We might feel bad if we don’t have the means to help them, or be touched that a person in need would reach out. The last thing anyone would expect, especially from a well-off public figure, is a laughing fit. So the Gretchen Barretto viral video came as a surprise to many who know that the socialite-actress is fond of granting the wishes of strangers.

On Instagram, she has shared the good deeds she has done, from helping out someone going through dialysis to donating cans of formula milk.

In the clip, one of Gretchen’s friends, Patty Pineda, reads a letter out loud as the trio laughs uncontrollably.

The letter was sent by a mom in Surigao city and it read:

“My eldest po this January has been diagnosed with butas sa puso. Been sending my request for my brother who had two… duodenal mass and chest lymphoma and soon for chemo po and sana mabasa niyo po. Since it’s a Mother’s Day, ang request ko po sana is milk for my mother-in-law… Lilia … na 73-years-old mag-isa lang po siya…”

Did they really mean to offend?

The video, which was taken by Gretchen’s daughter Dominique, has since been deleted from Gretchen Barretto’s Instagram account. But it’s been widely circulated online and has earned a lot of negative reactions.

Many netizens slammed the three for being “insensitive” and “rude,” pointing out how “money can’t buy class.”

Despite the slew of criticism, the mom who sent the letter had nothing but good words to say about the three.

“Atually nanood ako sa live.. natatawa rin ako.kasi bisaya ako surigaonon, tagalog [Manileño] sila so talagang mahirap intindihin ang letter ko..,” said the mom, who chose to remain anonymous, in an interview with Inquirer.net.

The mom who sent the letter took no offense

Basically, Gretchen and friends Patty and Mimi found it funny how the mom opened the letter sharing her child’s condition, but then only wanted milk for her elderly mother-in-law.

“Akala nila lahat ng persons doon may request ako sa anak ko, kapatid ko na may cancer.. hindi pala [milk] lang pala. Ok lang po.. nakakatawa naman talaga,” she said, thanking Gretchen, and her friends Patty and Mimi for granting her request.

“May GOD bless you a thousandfold. Salamat naman at natawa kayo sa letter ko,” she added. “Laughter is the best medicine.”
