For married couples, it’s important to have friends and relationships outside of the marriage. However, these relationships can sometimes cross a line if you’re not careful, and cause problems in your marriage.

Here are 5 ways having a ‘social affair’ can ruin your marriage:

1. Spending too much time with other people

If you find yourself spending too much time with other people instead of with your spouse, then you might have a social affair with those people. It’s important to find the right balance between your social life and your married life and to always remember that your spouse should be the number 1 person in your life.

2. Keeping secrets from your spouse

There should be no secrets between a married couple (of course, there are some exceptions, such as if you’re planning a surprise birthday!) and honesty and trust are crucial in any marriage.

Keeping secrets from your spouse, and sharing them openly with your friends means that the trust in your relationship isn’t as strong as it needs to be since you’re more comfortable sharing your secrets with other people rather than your spouse. This can cause a lot of problems within your marriage, so it’s not a good idea to keep secrets from your spouse.

3. Talking about your problems to other people

If there are problems in your marriage, then you need to talk about it first with your spouse, and not your friends. Any problems in your marriage should first be discussed between the both of you as a couple instead of with your friends.

4. Hiding the friendship from your spouse

If it gets to a point where you need to hide your friendship from your spouse, then you need to think really hard about what you’re doing. Ask yourself, are you really just friends, or perhaps it’s slowly escalating to something more than friendship?

5. Being too close with a friend

It’s fine to have a best friend that’s not your spouse. However, if it gets to a point that you’re with your best friend more than your spouse, you really need to stop before you do something that you might regret.

Maybe you and your spouse have some issues that you need to work out, that’s why you’re looking towards other people for attention. If that’s the case, then you need to fix your relationship first in order to have a better relationship with your spouse.
