Having sex twice in an hour triples men's fertility!
It's good news all the way for couples trying to conceive...
Forget certain sex positions and eating particular foods to boost a wannabe dad’s fertility. Now, increased fertility for men comes with the enjoyable task of having sex twice within an hour.
In fact, according to new research from North Middlesex Hospital in London, this ‘double coming’ triples a man’s fertility, and banishes the popular idea that men should not have sex before trying to have a child in order to improve their potency.
The study
The study included 73 couples who were getting intrauterine insemination (IUI), which is a fertility treatment where sperm is placed directly into the womb.
The men (who were classed as sub-fertile) produced two sperm samples in one hour. Then, the second sample was used in the IUI treatment.
Remarkably, it resulted in a pregnancy rate of 20 percent. This is three times higher than the usual 6 percent success rate experienced with IUI.
While 15 of the women conceived immediately, another 10 became pregnant when they tried this little trick in their fertile period the following month. Overall success rate — 34 percent.
The study was conducted in order to compare the success rate of IUI with IVF. Experts believe that this finding could help couples trying to get pregnant without fertility treatment.
Why does this tactic work?
Instead of reducing a man’s fertility levels, having extra sex within the hour actually boosts it because the second sperm sample is fresher and contains more good quality, fertile sperm.
Dr. Jackson Kirkman-Brown, a reproductive expert at the University of Birmingham, told the Daily Mail, “People still think that if you want to have a baby, you should save up sperm when, in fact, not having sex is very bad for men because it affects sperm quality. The fresher the sperm, the better its condition.”
Meanwhile Dr Gulam Bahadur, an infertility specialist at North Middlesex Hospital who led the investigation, says: ‘Though this is a relatively small study, we believe it is a big step forward and could make a major difference to pregnancy rates.”
