Nothing is more stressful for parents than seeing their little ones fall ill.  The culprits are none other than tiny, harmful invaders that attack your child’s immune system, breaching their walls of wellness.

They don’t need a cloak of darkness to do their dirty deeds. They remain active, preying, 24/7.

Who are these sneaky ninjas? They are  the common germs that hide from our sight in every corner of our homes.

Germs hide in places and objects commonly used by the whole family. Take the bathroom sink, for example. This is where your child washes his hands, brushes his teeth, and plays with his water gun. And when you’re not looking, his little fingers may reach into the drain, which is teeming with millions of germs, just waiting to pounce on his pudgy hands.

Mums and dads, it’s time to transform into effective Germ Hunters to bust those bugs once and for all. Let’s find out where these germs typically lurk in your house and how you can protect your loved ones from them!

First, let’s learn about our targets.

What are Germs?

Germs are tiny little creatures invisible to the naked eye and only visible through a microscope.

Types of Germs

Germs are found everywhere, inside and outside our homes and our bodies. Everywhere, really.

There are four major types of germs: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.

Bacteria: Bacteria are single-cell organisms that thrive in diverse environments.

There are good bacteria and  bad bacteria.

Good bacteria live in our gut and help in digestion.

Bad bacteria can cause infections in the ears,  sore throat (tonsillitis or strep throat), cavities, and pneumonia.

Viruses: A virus is a small infectious agent, but it needs a living cell of another organism to grow and multiply. . Viruses can infect all types of life forms, from animals and plants to other microorganisms, including bacteria.

They can cause chickenpox, measles, flu, and many other diseases.

Fungi: According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, fungi are any of about 99,000 known species of organisms of the kingdom Fungi. This includes  yeasts, rusts, smuts, mildews, molds, and mushrooms. These are plant-like organisms and they are found in damp, warm places.

They can cause  infections such as fungal nail infections, athlete’s foot, or other similar conditions. These infections are not only irritating but they also easily spread around the rest of the body.

Protozoa: The name might have transported you back to your Biology class in high school but these are real germs that now threaten the health of your child!

These tiny microbes love moisture and often spread diseases through water. Some protozoa cause intestinal infections that lead to diarrhoea, nausea, and belly pain.

Where do germs lurk in your home?

As we mentioned earlier, germs are found everywhere in the house. But some places and objects harbour more germs than others, exposing your child to illness.

Be a germ hunter: Tips on handling germs at home

Most germs are spread through surface contact (through touch, or through germs on dirty floors), through the air (in sneezes, coughs, or even breath) or through fluids (such as sweat, saliva, and blood).

The best way to protect yourself and your little ones from germs is to stay away from them. Here’s what you can do at home to keep germs at bay:

  1. Wash hands regularly: Get your kids into the habit of washing their hands. Dirty or unwashed hands  harbour germs that easily make their way to your child’s mouth . Teach them to wash their hands before they eat or touch food, after they use the bathroom, touch pets, or play outside.
  2. Use tissues: Use tissues when you sneeze and sniffle, and teach the same to your kids. Make sure you don’t just throw tissues on the floor to pick up later.  That’s really a dirty habit! Toss them in the trash and wash your hands afterwards.
  3. Instill healthy habits: Healthy habits protect us from diseases. It is advisable that you make sure your children eat well, get enough exercise and sleep well to maintain a strong immune system. If the immune systems is strong, germ attacks will be less effective.
  4. Keep your house clean: To protect your little ones from bad germs, make sure you keep the house clean, especially the floor, toilet and bathroom areas.
