Nowadays, having a home-based job is slowly starting to become more and more widespread as it’s a cost-effective way for companies to do business, and there’s also an incentive for employees since it means that they don’t have to spend hours stuck in traffic during their morning commute.

And for mom and dads, working from home is particularly inviting since it means that they can have more time to bond with their kids while they’re working. However, making the transition from working in an office to working from home isn’t as simple as you think.

Is a home-based job always a better option?

Having a home-based job seems too good to be true right? You no longer have to take the morning commute everyday and contend with traffic, and you’ll also save some money since you won’t be commuting and you won’t have your lunch outside.

However, there are some things to consider before you start working from home:

  • You need a dedicated workspace. You need a good quality laptop or a desktop computer, a good internet connection, and a room where you can work in peace. Sometimes, employers also ask their employees to have a webcam in case they need to make video calls etc.
  • You need to be flexible with your time. Some home-based jobs have irregular working hours. This means that even if you’re working from home, you might have to work the graveyard shift, so you need to be flexible with your time.
  • Are you able to work independently and have discipline? One of the important things to consider when taking on a home-based job would be if you can work independently, and if you can finish all of your work even if you’re at home. Since you’re working from home, there’s always the temptation to just laze around and skip on work, so you also have to factor that in.
  • As a parent, taking care of your kids and working at the same time can be troublesome. Taking care of kids is hard enough as it is, and if you’re also working while caring for your kids, then working from home can be very stressful.

Make sure to think about these things before you start working from home so that you’re prepared and you’ll know what to expect.

Working in an office has its perks too

On the flipside, working in an office also has some perks compared to working from home, even for moms and dads.

Here are some benefits to think about:

  • You already have a dedicated workspace. If you’re working in an office, your company will provide you with a computer, a desk, and a (sometimes) reliable internet connection. Working from home means that you’ll have to pay for those things yourself, while if you’re in an office it’s all provided for you.
  • Some people work better in a rigid structure. While being free to work however you want has its perks, some people are actually more efficient if they have structure. Being surrounded by your boss and co-workers provides that structure and some people find that they finish work faster since there’s less distraction.
  • Some jobs simply can’t be done at home. Not all jobs can be home-based. In financial institutions particularly, you’ll need to use the software that the company uses as well as be connected to a private network. This means that you’ll have limited choices when it comes to home-based jobs.
  • You’ll have co-workers to help you out. Having trouble with a spreadsheet? Then asking for help is as easy as simply talking to the person sitting right beside you. If you’re working from home, you’ll need to send an e-mail or send a private message before they can assist you.

Working from home and working in an office both have their pros and cons, and when it comes to choosing which one’s right for you, it’s just as important to consider your family and how your job will work in your current setup.
