Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg announced that he and his wife Priscilla are expecting a baby girl. And in his true trademark style, he shared the news — where else? — but on his Facebook page.
In this heartfelt and touching announcement, Zuckerberg said that “There will be a new chapter” in their lives.
He goes on to reveal, “We’ve been trying to have a child for a couple of years and have had three miscarriages along the way. You feel so hopeful when you learn you’re going to have a child. You start imagining who they’ll become and dreaming of hopes for their future. You start making plans, and then they’re gone.
It’s a lonely experience. Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you — as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own.”
But, “When we started talking to our friends, we realized how frequently this happened — that many people we knew had similar issues and that nearly all had healthy children after all.”
Their pregnancy is now far enough along that the risk of loss is very low and they “are very hopeful.”
In a rare candid moment, the proud daddy-to-be shared that Cilla and the baby are both doing fine, and that in a recent ultrasound, the little one “gave me a thumbs up “like” with her hand” which convinced him that she takes after him.
Zuckerberg’s announcement was welcomed by netizens around the world as many applauded him for shedding light on the necessity of being more open about miscarriages and the importance of doing so in support of those who have gone, or are going, through it.
