Have you ever been attracted to someone else other than your husband? I’m not talking about fleeting celebrity crushes. I mean someone you actually know or see daily. It could be a neighbor, a co-worker, or a longtime friend.

Have you ever fantasized about this man? While it’s natural for married women to have sexual fantasies not involving their better half, it’s when you start acting on them when it becomes dangerous.

Though some couples believe flirting is a healthy expression of sexuality and it keeps things interesting, others acknowledge how easily flirting can turn into emotional and physical cheating.

So how can you resist the urge or temptation to flirt or cheat on your better half?

Here’s some advice from Mark D. White, Ph.D. in an article on Psychology Today.

1. Make an effort

Willpower has a lot to do with resisting tempting circumstances. We have to believe we can do it. We have to trust ourselves enough to be deserving of our partner’s trust. Don’t underestimate your physical, emotional, and mental power to resist, reassures Dr. White.

2. Get by with (a lot of) help from your friends

Keeping yourself accountable through the help of trusted friends can be one of the great weapons in shielding yourself from those who are tempting you. Be open and willing to be called out when you’re on dangerous ground. Set up a routine with your trusted friend, have coffee and just talk about what frustrates you. This will also keep you from confiding in those who might just worsen the situation, like a male friend with a hidden agenda.

3. Look at the big picture

Consider the long-term consequences of your actions. If you lead a person on, will you feel obligated to deepen your relationship with them? How close is too close? Having male friends is good, even healthy, but be honest with yourself. Don’t downplay situations wherein you are becoming more attached to a male friend than your husband.

4. Get out

Avoiding places where you could be tempted is also a good strategy. Steer clear of bars or any place that could be a place where you’re tempted. If you can’t avoid encountering a specific person, like a co-worker or neighbor, make sure that you only interact with them with other people around. Be honest about who you consider a temptation and don’t let your guard down, especially if the said person is showing interest or being “extra” friendly.

5. Lastly, communicate with your hubby

It might be awkward and challenging, but it’s so important to be open with your partner, especially when you feel that you are close to straying. Of course, no one wants to have this conversation. But it is absolutely necessary if you are on the brink of cheating and you want your partner to pull you back and save your relationship.
