Proper nutrition with an active lifestyle can help boost your child’s optimal growth.

Studies show that Filipinos are among the world’s shortest people. According to the 2015 Updating of the Nutritional Status of Filipinos, conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), 1 out of 3 Filipino kids aged 5 to 10 years old is affected by stunted growth. Meanwhile, 1 out of three Filipino kids aged 5 to 10 years old is underweight for their age.1

What Are the Issues?

The World Health Organization (WHO), defines stunted growth as, “the lack of weight for a child’s age. Similarly, stunted growth is a lack of height for a child’s age. In both cases, leading causes include, among others, poor or improper nutrition.” 2

But the case of addressing the issue of stunted growth in children assumes greater significance because of a certain fact.

That fact is this: Although the lack of weight can be addressed at any point during a child’s development, stunted growth can only be addressed during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life.

Can Something Be Done About It?

What can parents do to address the issues of stunted growth and being underweight?

Nature vs. nurture has been a long-standing debate when it comes to children’s growth. Are genetics (“nature”) the sole factors in defining the height and weight of a person? Or does the environment (“nurture”) help shape an individual’s capability to maximize his/her growth potential?

The truth lies in-between: Both nature and nurture play key roles in a child’s growth. When it comes to height and weight, studies show that genetics isn’t the only factor. Research shows that nutrition accounts for as much as 20 to 40% of a person’s height.

What Can I Do For My Child’s Optimal Growth for Their Age?

Since we know that external factors (nurture) such as nutrition and physical activities also help determine a child’s growth, parents need to ensure that children get the right nutrition to stimulate growth.

These important nutrients include protein, calcium, vitamin D and iron.

  • Protein: These are building blocks of the body. Complete proteins, such as the ones found in milk and animal products (meat), assist in the development and growth of a child’s muscles.
  • Calcium: This helps a child grow healthy bones and teeth.
  • Vitamin D: This vitamin enables the body to absorb the calcium it receives. Without it, the calcium being consumed cannot optimally repair and strengthen bones.
  • Iron: Between the ages of one and six, particularly during growth spurts, the iron requirements of a child significantly increase. Iron plays a key role in the production of hemoglobin which transports oxygen – which all cells need –throughout the body.

Given the behaviour of toddlers and growing up children, most parents find it difficult to feed nutritious food to their children. For instance, some kids are picky eaters. Some have particular taste receptors that make them indisposed to eating vegetables. Hence, they may never like certain vegetables, no matter how hard they try.

Whatever the reasons, there are consequences to not giving children the proper nutrition. Children who refuse to eat healthy may become undernourished, leading to stunted growth or underweight problems.
