According to a news report from TMZ, high profile celebrity parents Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have recently welcomed their third child, a baby girl, into their lives.

Their child was born through surrogacy

If you're a fan of Kim's show, then you probably know about her frustrations in bearing a third child.

It's also no secret that Kim had a hard time with her first two pregnancies. Doctors have warned her that she wouldn't be able to carry a third baby safely.

That's probably the reason why the couple chose to go with a surrogate mother who carried their third child.

In the announcement that Kim made through her app, she said that the child was born on January 15th, at around 12:47 am. The baby weighed 7lbs 6oz.

"Kanye and I are happy to announce the arrival of our healthy, beautiful baby girl. We are incredibly grateful to our surrogate who made our dreams come true with the greatest gift one could give and to our wonderful doctors and nurses for their special care. North and Saint are especially thrilled to welcome their baby sister," Kim shared.

It was also reported that the couple spent their holidays in Los Angeles, in order to stay close with the surrogate mother who was carrying their child.

How does surrogacy work?

For a lot of women, becoming pregnant and giving birth to a beautiful child is one of the most amazing experiences in life. However, not all women are able to carry a baby safely.

That's why some mothers opt to go through the process of surrogacy, or having a surrogate mother become pregnant and carry their child.

There are two types of surrogacy, namely:

  1. Traditional - A form of surrogacy wherein the surrogate mother gets fertilized with the father's, or a donor's, sperm.
  2. Gestational - In this case, both the mother and the father provide an egg and a sperm. Then the embryo is placed in the uterus of the surrogate mother.

The entire process is still not straightforward, since aside from the various medical processes involved, the laws in some countries still aren't updated regarding surrogacy.

In the Philippines, there's no law that governs the practice. But some lawmakers have made attempts to ban it.

There's also the problem of who the child's legal mother should be. In the Philippines, the mother is always the one who gave birth to the child.

Regardless, surrogacy is still a viable option for many couples who have difficulties in having a child. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that the parents can have a healthy child that they will be able to love, cherish, and take care of.
