The Mayon Volcano eruption has recently been the topic of discussion not just on television, but also on social media sites.
But what exactly caused Mayon to erupt, and is there anything to be worried about?
How did the eruption start?
Mayon Volcano is among the Philippines’ most active volcanos. In fact, in the past 500 years, there have been around 50 eruptions.
Sometimes these eruptions can be minor ones, but as is the case right now, it sometimes turns violent.
Volcano eruptions, just like earthquakes, are unpredictable and can be caused by a number of reasons. But thankfully, scientists and researchers from PHIVOLCS are constantly monitoring active volcanoes as well as seismic activities in order to warn people if a volcano eruption might occur.
The 2018 activity of the Mayon Volcano started last January 13, with ash and steam coming out of the volcano. The government immediately evacuated all communities inside the danger zone, and there are no casualties or injuries as of the moment.
The eruptions gradually started to increase, with lava fountains being seen from the volcano last January 23 and 24. As of now, explosions are still ongoing, so classes are still suspended, and the people that were evacuated are still inside evacuation centers.
Important safety tips during a volcano eruption
Here are some important tips to keep in mind if you and your family live near an active volcano:
- Always make sure to keep updated regarding the status of the volcano. Nearby communities that are affected are usually alerted and told to evacuate well before any dangerous explosions.
- Make sure to take any pets and farm animals into designated shelters in order to protect them from breathing in volcanic ash.
- If there is no need to evacuate, make sure that you close windows and doors in order to avoid breathing in the ash flow from volcanic eruptions.
- Face masks are important, especially if you’re traveling or if you’re working outside during an eruption.
- Always follow the safety tips provided by authorities. Never try to linger in dangerous areas.
- Have enough food and medicine that will last for an extended period of time, especially if you’re in an evacuation center.
