It’s hard to find a love story that’s more amazing than that of Wanda and Marvin Brewington. The couple share a long marriage of over 47 years, have beaten cancer twice, and now they decided to celebrate their love for one another with a photo shoot that was done by their beloved daughter!

This couple beat cancer twice and has been married for 47 years!

Wanda and Marvin’s love story starts when they first met on the campus of Livingston College in Salisbury, North Carolina. The pair were college sweethearts, and soon after, they got married in Wanda’s hometown in a backyard wedding ceremony.

In 1973, Marvin was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and in 1987 he was diagnosed with colon cancer. His wife Wanda was by his side and together they beat cancer for the first time.

However in 2013, Marvin was diagnosed with prostate cancer while a year later, Wanda was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.

Most couples would find it very difficult to deal with so many setbacks and life-threatening illnesses in their lives, but not the Brewingtons. They share that “Our love for each other and faith in God” provided them the strength to overcome their struggles.

The couple adds, “We made a vow on our wedding day, through sickness and health and have always been determined that we can and will overcome anything. On the days that one of us is down, the other one picks us up.”

The couple’s love for one another has inspired their own daughter.

And being a witness to how much her parents love each other, their daughter shares, “I have learned that love isn’t always easy, but it is always worth the work. I really strive to model myself as a wife and mother after the example that my parents have taught me.”

She adds some important lessons that her parents taught her, saying “Honesty and communication, never going to bed upset, and finding a way to compliment your partner.”

How can couples strive towards a long marriage and make their relationship last?

Married couples want their relationship not to simply last, but to also be a fruitful, happy, and rewarding marriage.

And you might be surprised to find out that the secrets of a successful relationship aren’t as complicated as you might think.

  1. Learn to compromise. Compromise is very important in a marriage. Relationships are a give and take relationship, so couples need to be flexible and know when to give and when to take.
  2. Communication is key. Talking to one another is very important and should always be a constant part of your marriage. Couples shouldn’t be afraid to share how they feel towards each other, even if sometimes it can be negative.
  3. Choose your battles. You don’t always need to win all of your arguments. Sometimes, giving in to your spouse is the better thing to do instead of constantly pushing your side.
  4. Let your spouse know your needs. People can’t read minds, so if you need something from your spouse, don’t hesitate to ask them. This is especially true when it comes to intimacy, so couples need to be open with these sorts of discussions.
  5. Trust and honesty are important. Trust and honesty are key to making a marriage last. These two things go hand-in-hand and are important pillars of your relationship. Try to avoid lying to your spouse or hiding things from them as it only creates bigger problems in the future.
