In times of darkness, there will always be those who will continue to shine their light. After a group of armed rebels lay siege to several areas in Marawi and started a clash with the military, innocent families caught in the crossfire fled their homes. As of this writing, 1,432 families have been displaced by the Marawi crisis.
Many have come to their aid, led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, who have provided P36 million worth of assistance to those affected.
But we don’t have to shell out that much to help, because as a group of moms proved, we can all help in our own little way.
The group, called Modern Nanays of Mindanao, touched the hearts of many when they decided to send love and warmth to those displaced by the recent crisis in Marawi in the form malong-wrapped care packages.

“Nothing is too little. Nobody is too small. Every act of kindness counts,” they wrote on their Facebook page, urging their followers to continue donating what they can to the moms and babies in evacuation centers.
What does each care pack contain?
The packs mostly contain essentials for moms and babies aged 2 below:
- 5 canned goods (easy-to-open)
- 5 water bottles
- 18 pieces of diapers
- Baby clothes
- 3 pieces of soap
- 6 toothpaste sachets
- 1 dozen shampoo sachets
- 2 packs of sanitary pads
- 2 toothbrushes
- 1 face towel
- 1 pack of baby wipes
- 1 bottle of alcohol
They have so far sent out 306 care packs, mostly to the Buru-un and Ma. Cristina evacuation centers.
The “malong” is a traditional Maranao garment, that can be used in a myriad of ways. It can be used as a blanket, dress, hammock, and baby carrier!
