Has your usual merienda rotation gone bland? Now that we’re in a pandemic and all of our meals and snacks are done at home, it’s easy to get stuck in a usual routine.
Even the kids might be complaining about their afternoon snack already, if you serve them the same thing after online class. And while it’s okay to order out from time to time, it’s safer and more economical to just prepare food at home.
So why don’t we make merienda more exciting by preparing new snacks the whole family will enjoy? And you can even do it with food items you already have in your pantry. The star of the recipe? Sliced bread.

Creative Snack Ideas with Monde Bread
So what are we waiting for? Let’s begin exploring our pantries and get the ingredients to prepare these exciting snacks that kids of all ages will love.
Choco Banana Sandwich
A sweet addition to your peanut butter and cheese spreads is a good chocolate spread. Why? Your child will never be able to resist it. Make it healthier by adding some fruits to the mix. A banana is easily available anywhere in the Philippines, and it’s great with chocolate or peanut butter spread.
This update on your child’s palaman is so easy, you can even teach him how to make it. If you want to impress, you can invest in different shapes of cookie cutters available online. But if you don’t have those, a sharp knife, and a careful, steady hand will do.
Ingredients:
- 2 slices of Monde Bread (if you want to indulge, choose the Milk variant. But you can also try wheat bread to find a healthy balance with chocolate)
- 1 teaspoon chocolate spread
- 1 banana
Instructions:
- Put the chocolate spread on the sliced bread, spreading evenly.
- Slice the banana thinly and put them on top of the bread.
- Serve and enjoy. Use cookie cutters or a knife to make fun shapes with the bread.
You can also put peanut butter or dulce de leche instead of chocolate spread.
Fluffy French Toast
This delicious bread recipe can be served at breakfast (with bacon and eggs), or a standalone treat for merienda.
Ingredients:
- Monde Bread (choose the Milk variant to achieve the perfect sweet taste)
- 1 egg
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose cream
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- Butter
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
Instructions:
- Beat the egg. Mix in the all-purpose cream, vanilla extract, brown sugar and cinnamon powder together.
- Dip a slice of your Monde Bread on the egg and cream mixture, carefully not to let it soak too hard so it will not be too soggy.
- Melt the butter on a non-stick pan (just enough butter to coat the pan) and fry the bread slices until golden brown.
You can serve the French toast with pancake syrup. If you’re feeling extra, you can sprinkle a bit of confectioner’s sugar on top of the bread, and include some fruit slices when you serve it.
Fluffy Strawberry Swirl Rolls
If you want to surprise the kids with a fun yet healthy sweet snack, try this recipe. You can get fresh strawberries or strawberry jam, cream cheese spread and whipped cream or ready-made frosting from the supermarket.
Ingredients:
- Monde Bread (get the Milk variant for that milky buttery taste)
- 4 fresh strawberries (sliced) or 3 tablespoons strawberry jam
- 3 tablespoons cream cheese
- Whipped cream or ready-made frosting (you can also check out this recipe of frosting, using ingredients you already have in your pantry)
Instructions:
- Preheat convection oven or regular oven to 350. Take a rolling pin and roll the 3 slices of Monde Bread into flat pieces. It’s almost as if you’re flattening the bread to make it like a crepe.
- Spread a thin layer of cream cheese onto the bread. Then put the strawberry slices (but leave some for topping) or spread the strawberry spread on top of the cream cheese and thinly rolled bread.
- Roll each slice into an individual rolled up pocket. Place a skewer (a toothpick will do) inside each roll to hold the rolls together when baking.
- Place the rolls onto the baking sheet and place the baking sheet into the convection oven or regular oven for 1-2 minutes until the bread is slightly golden. Let it cool for five minutes (you can put them in the fridge)
- Top it with whipped cream frosting (be as creative as you can) and sprinkle with the remaining strawberry bits.
- Serve and enjoy. Remember to remove the toothpick before serving it to the kids.
Twisted Hotdogs
If your kids love hotdogs, they will surely enjoy this hotdog sandwich with a twist. It’s a little bit of a stretch, but surely you can pull it off. Check out this recipe from Tastemade:

- 2 slices cheese
- 2 hot dogs

Instructions:
- Cut crusts off the bread. Top with 1 slice cheese and 1 hot dog. Roll up to form a cylinder.
- Lay out bread crusts on plastic wrap and top each with some mayonnaise. Lay the hot dog cylinder across the crusts perpendicularly. Use plastic wrap to roll the crusts around the bread cylinder.
- Repeat with remaining bread, cheese and hot dog.
- Bake in an oven toaster for 2-3 minutes.
- Serve with ketchup, mustard and parsley.
