It’s sad that it is often the innocent that pays the price of someone else’s sins. When Elena Smocot started an affair with her lover, she didn’t realize it would come back and bite her; the affair resulted in her pregnancy.

Months later, after she had already given birth, she realized that her newborn looked like her lover and none like the rest of her children. To conceal her affair, she murdered her own newborn.

As soon as she realized the newborn’s similarity with her lover, she grabbed the child by the legs and bashed his head against the furniture. She did this a few times until the baby stopped screaming.

Carrying the motionless infant, she brought him outside where she laid it down on the ground and repeatedly stamped on his body.

Inside the house were her nephew and four-year-old son. They heared her shouting and went to look, and when they saw what she was doing, ran to the neighbors to alert them.

Meanwhile, Elena grabbed a shard of kitchen tile, slashed the newborn open, and began ripping his intestines out. She put the intestines in the bath and then switched on the water to wash herself.

“She described the way in which she took the baby’s intestines out,” said prosecutor Alice Ruja who handled the case. “She says she had to repeatedly chop at the corpse as well because it was not as easy as slicing chicken meat.”

Elena might have been suffering from depression, according to evidence during her court hearing, because in both 2010 and 2012 she had suffered from postnatal depression.

The court ruled she was in full control of her actions and knew what she was doing when she murdered the child. The judge also took away her parental rights for her other two children.

Elena has been sentenced to 18 years in jail, but the ruling is not final and can still be appealed.
