As the mother of a newborn, you surely have many questions about taking care of your baby. From trimming those tiny nails on her little fingers to taking care of her soft head, scalp and hair, it’s a whole new world to explore for you — and a great responsibility. Needless to say, you want the best for your baby.

You might also know that a baby’s skin is one-third thinner than an adult’s and this means that their skin is more susceptible to skin irritation problems. This makes it even more challenging to keep your baby’s delicate skin protected.

Here is a checklist for you that will help you equip yourself with the right information to succeed in taking care of your newborn in a wholesome way.

Baby’s Eyes

What you need: cotton balls

Action Tip: Soak one cotton ball in some warm water. Clean the corners of your baby’s eyes, wiping gently from the inside corners to the outside corners. Use a new cotton ball for each eye.

Baby’s Nose

Action Tip:  Wipe gently around each nostril to get rid of mucus. It’s best not to put anything inside your baby’s nostrils (including cotton buds). This can hurt the lining of the nose and cause bleeding.

Baby’s Ears

What you need: cotton balls

Action Tip:  Wipe behind your baby’s ears and around the outside of each ear. Be careful not to stick anything (including cotton buds) inside her ear, because it’s very easy to cause damage.

What you need: damp cotton balls, soft towel, moisturizer

Action Tip:  Wipe gently under your baby’s chin and neck, making sure you wipe between the folds of skin. Gently pat your baby’s skin dry using a soft towel. Make sure you dry under the skin folds and behind his ears.

What you need: a piece of gauze, cotton or cloth and a glass of drinking water

Action Tip: Prepare a piece of gauze, cotton or cloth and a glass of drinking water. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap. Wrap the gauze, cotton or cloth around your finger and dampen it with water. Gently put your finger inside your baby’s mouth. Wipe the upper and then the lower gum pad once.

Baby’s Nails

What you need: nail clippers or baby scissors and finger pad

Action Tip: The best time to do this is while she’s sleeping. Another good time is right after a bath, when your baby’s nails are softest.

Baby’s Umbilical Care

What you need: cotton balls, boiled and cooled water

Action Tip: Wash your hands before handling the cord stump, and avoid touching it whenever possible.  Use water to keep your baby’s belly button area clean. You don’t usually need to use soap, creams, antiseptics or alcohol to clean it, and you don’t need to bandage the belly button.

Baby’s Body, Hair and Limbs

You can clean a baby’s body and limbs with lukewarm water any time, but the best time to do this is during the bath time.

What you need:

  • Baby bath tub
  • Baby soap/body-wash
  • Baby shampoo
  • Gentle lotion or moisturizer
  • Soft towels or hooded baby towels
  • Baby hairbrush
  • Soft washcloths

Action Tip: Baby’s skin is different and it can lose moisture up to five times faster than that of an adult’s. This makes babies more prone to rashes and allergies; so much so that even gentle soaps can leave their skin dry. Try the all new Baby Dove! Not only is it mild, but it also helps moisturize baby’s delicate skin, leaving it soft and smooth after every bath.

Other Essentials

Besides the above, here are some other essential items you must add to your checklist:

  • First-aid kit

  • Bottle sterilizing kit
