An open letter to my partner who doesn’t believe in God

Our beliefs might not be the same, but it doesn't mean that I love you any less. Nor does it mean that God loves you any less.

I remember my friends talking to me about you; how we won’t be compatible at all since I’m a devout Catholic, and you’re very firm being a non-believer.

Thank you for respecting my faith

After 10 years of us being together, I guess we somehow made it work. And we’re still trying to make it work. I mean, it wasn’t easy at first, especially when it came to dealing with my family (thank you for being so patient with them), but these days, I think my mom and dad mellowed out a bit, since they realized that just because you’re an atheist, doesn’t mean that you’re automatically a bad person.

I guess I also owe it to you for being respectful about my faith, and somehow my prejudices about your beliefs–or non-beliefs–went away. I know we don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things, but hey, all couples have disagreements, and we’ve just learned to agree to disagree on some things. As long as we’re happy together, right?

You’re still the woman I fell in love with

Regardless of the fights we’ve had before–and we’ve been through a lot–I know that you’re still the woman I fell in love with after all these years. I guess you’re God’s way of telling me that even if people are different, love is the one thing that binds us all together.

I still pray everyday, and thank God that he brought you into my life. I wont for you if you would not want to come back into the fold, because after being with you for over a decade, I’ve seen how much you love our kids, my parents, my relatives, and me. That fact alone is enough to prove that no matter what you believe in–or don’t believe in–you still care for us, and love us unconditionally.

God still loves you, and I love you

No matter what happens, or even if you don’t believe in Him, I want you to know that God loves you–He still does. And so do I. I love you. I wouldn’t be half the man I am right now if it wasn’t for you. I wouldn’t be as resilient and as strong-willed as I am right now if it weren’t for you and having you in my life.

I praise and thank God for giving us you, a wonderful mother to our children. I really couldn’t ask for anything more in life. You make me really happy, and you’re the one person that I’d be happy to spend the rest of my life with. I love you, and I know that you love me too.

And if one day maybe, just maybe, you decide to acknowledge Him again, know that I will help you get back in every step of the way.
