The body of 28-year-old OFW Melody Castro was discovered inside the apartment where she was working as a caregiver, two days after the massive Taiwan Earthquake. Her body was found trapped under a cabinet.
She was unable to escape the Taiwan earthquake
According to the chief of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), Lito Banayo, Melody’s body was discovered inside the ruins of the apartment where she worked.
In an interview with DZMM he said, “Nadaganan siya ng mabigat na cabinet. Parang bumagsak ‘yung cabinet kaya hindi siya nakatakbo palabas ng building.”
He also added that Melody was the sole breadwinner of her family since her husband became disabled after an accident. She also has a five-year-old daughter here in the Philippines.
MECO has also been in touch with Melody’s mother and father. They have asked them if they want to go to Taipei to see their daughter’s body before she is sent back to the Philippines. The family still hasn’t decided on whether or not they will go to Taiwan.
Melody was working as the sole caregiver of a 63-year-old woman, her 68-year-old husband, and the woman’s mute younger brother. She has been working as an OFW for over six years.
The death toll from the earthquake has increased
Due to the magnitude of the earthquake that rocked Hualien City in Eastern Taiwan, the death toll has risen to 10 people as of Thursday evening.
272 others have been injured, while seven people are unaccounted for.
There are about 1,400 OFWs working in Hualien at the time of the quake, while there are a total of 143,000 OFWs working in Taiwan.
Aside from Melody, no other Filipino workers have been injured or killed.
