Breathlessness during pregnancy is quite common. Together with the changes that occur in your body, the increase in the number of hormones in your blood causes your breathing to be deeper and more frequent. Don’t worry, though! Your baby is getting all the oxygen he needs through the placenta. As your baby grows throughout your pregnancy, the uterus becomes larger and the diaphragm is pushed towards the lungs. As a result, the lung’s capacity decreases and your breathing rate increases.

When you are in this condition, even the smallest amount of effort can make you breathless and seemingly gasp for air. Environmental factors such as pollution, over-crowding, and hot and humid weather can further intensify breathlessness. Take note, though, that experiencing acute breathlessness is not normal. Consult your doctor right away when chest pain and a rapid pulse accompany breathlessness.
