Hemorrhoids during Pregnancy

Hemorrhoids are veins that become enlarged due to pressure. The veins located right below the rectum in the anal region are especially susceptible to become inflamed because they are close to the skin and sustain a lot of pressure on a daily basis. Hemorrhoids are usually small but may increase in size when the tissues around them begin to loosen up. When a woman is pregnant, the pressure in the rectum region changes frequently because of the growing fetus. Constipation makes the problem worse.

Itching, bleeding, severe pain, and venous inflammation characterize hemorrhoids. If the hemorrhoids in the lower anal region begin to protrude, it may cause thrombosed hemorrhoids. This complication is due to blood clotting inside the hemorrhoidal veins due to severe pressure and constriction. When a woman is in labor, the pressure becomes really intense and can cause hemorrhoids to flare up.

How to Prevent Hemorrhoids during Pregnancy

  • You can improve your diet to prevent constipation.
  • Avoid straining during bowel movement, and lie down on your side instead of on your back to take the pressure off.
  • Hemorrhoids can be treated using topical applications and creams that combat inflammation. However, you must get your doctor’s medical advice before applying anything on your hemorrhoids.
