Sleeping Positions during Pregnancy
For pregnant women, sleeping can present a major problem. Heartburn, back pain, and the increased size of the abdomen all make finding a comfortable sleeping position difficult. The pressure due to the increasing size of the uterus can cause a lot of problems in the body. If you sleep straight on your back, your abdomen puts a lot of pressure on major blood vessels and your intestines. You will then experience so many difficulties: breathing problem, backache, and reduction in blood circulation.
Sleeping on your stomach becomes a non-option, as it would be difficult to do the farther along you are in your pregnancy. It is therefore recommended to sleep on your side, specifically the left side, during pregnancy. This position allows for maximum flow of blood to the fetus and helps to improve the functioning of the kidneys. Putting a pillow between your bent knees will make you even more comfortable. Falling asleep during pregnancy is not as easy as counting 1-2-3. You have to experiment on the position most comfortable for you while keeping in mind the risks and benefits of each.
