Preparing for baby: A checklist for moms

There is a great deal to consider when preparing for the arrival of your new baby. Here is a checklist of items you will most probably need for the arrival of your little one.

For baby’s room

Baby’s cot

· Wind-up mobiles and other toys

· Mattress

· Blanket

· Bumper

· Cot sheets

· Mattress protector

Changing table (optional)

Chest of drawers

Clothes

· Mittens

· Bootees

· Diapers — cloth or disposable

· Nappy liners (optional)

· Tie-side or button shirts – long and short sleeves

· Pajama bottoms

· Lampin/flat cloth diapers

· Safety pins/diaper clips

· Face towels

Cotton balls

Cotton buds

Nail clippers

Cream to prevent nappy rash

Oil for massaging baby’s tummy during ‘gassy’ episodes

Ziploc bags to store soiled diapers

Gripe water

Thermometer (to use when baby is unwell)

For baby’s bath time

Baby bath tub

Bath mat

Bath towel

Bath sponge

Baby soap/cleanser

Baby shampoo

A jug of cool boiled water

Baby oil

Baby powder with puff

For caring for the umbilical cord stump

Note: Breastmilk is best for babies up to 2 years and beyond.

If you are going to breastfeed your baby, all you will need are your breasts. However, some moms choose to buy other accessories (please refer to our For Mommy list below).

If you are going to bottlefeed your baby either with expressed breast milk or formula milk, you will need the following:

Milk bottles & small-sized/newborn teats

Bottle scrub brush

Warmer cum carrier bag

Large pan/pot (for sterilizing)

Tongs (to handle bottles that have been sterilized)

Electric steam sterilizer (optional)

Milk containers/dispensers (for formula milk)

Accessories (some of which are optional, depending on your particular situation)

Playpen

Walker

Stairgates

Rubber protectors for sharp edges

Highchair

Bouncer

Stroller

Baby carrier

Pram

Baby books made of cloth or board material
