The extreme spike in the number of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) cases in the Philippines poses a serious threat to our families.

According to the DOH, the number of cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease cases has tripled since 2014. 563 cases have been reported so far this year while only 180 cases were recorded in 2014.

The regions with the largest spike in the number of cases are Baguio (with only 5 cases in 2014 but 141 cases this year), and Calamba, Laguna (with 23 in 2014 and 116 in 2015).

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease is an infectious disease which is usually not fatal and is most common in children under the age of five.

Though the figures are alarming, we have the power to fight it by remembering these three simple things.

Hand wash religiously

By washing your hands often using soap and water, you can reduce the spread of HFMD exponentially. This is especially important after using the toilet or changing diapers.

Not sharing is caring

Do not share cups or eating utensils with people you suspect are suffering from this disease.

Hugging isn’t always nice!

Because this disease spreads through close contact, hugging and kissing suspected infected persons should be avoided.

Though there is no existing vaccine for hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), we can fight it by equipping ourselves with knowledge and preparedness.

As with anything concerning the welfare or our children, it’s always best to be one step ahead.
