The next time you contemplate whether or not to buy that effective but expensive rodent killer, make sure to think back on this story, because however expensive it may be, it will make you put the product in your grocery cart.

In Mexico, rodents have killed a four-month-old baby by chewing off half of her face in the middle of the night. The unsupervised toddler was sleeping when it happened; her mother, on the other hand, was out clubbing.

Here is a quick guide:

  • Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair damaged screens.
  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home, including areas where utilities and pipes enter the home, using caulk, steel wool or a combination of both.
  • Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly.
  • Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains that provide the perfect breeding site for pests.
  • Inspect items such as boxes, grocery bags and other packages brought into the home.
  • Do not hesitate to act if you spot evidence of a rodent infestation: They are fast breeders, and a small problem can turn into a big issue overnight if left untreated.
