"I could already feel my baby crowning. As a first-time mom who barely had any doctor appointments, I relied entirely on my instincts. With no help arriving, I gave it my all to heat a pot of water to sterilize my scissors and gathered pillows to support my hips. At this point, the pains were already unbearable..."

In a world where the journey of pregnancy and childbirth is often surrounded by anticipation and support, the then-19-year-old journalism student Patricia Samin’s story stands out as a remarkable testament to courage and maternal instinct. Patricia’s path to motherhood back in 2017 was anything but conventional, and her experience of giving birth alone reveals both the trials and triumphs of a young mother’s journey.

A Surprising Discovery

Imagine discovering you’re pregnant in the late stages of your pregnancy—surprising, right? That was Patricia’s reality. Dealing with what she thought were health issues due to irregular periods, the news of her pregnancy came as a shock. “My mom was the first to notice something was off,” Patricia shares. Her mother’s intuition led to a pregnancy test, which changed everything. “I was overwhelmed with the responsibility of creating a loving home for my baby,” Patricia recalls, acknowledging the weight of the news.

Last-Minute Preparations

With the pregnancy revealed only around the 7th or 8th month, Patricia’s preparations were rushed. “We prioritized checking the baby’s health first,” she explains. A visit to Chinese General Hospital confirmed a healthy heartbeat, but financial constraints led them to delay finalizing a birth plan. Adjustments at home were minimal; Patricia focused on maintaining her health and wellbeing with the support of her partner and in-laws.

The Unexpected Labor

As December 1st began, Patricia faced labor pains that were initially mild. However, as the day progressed, the contractions became more intense. With her partner at school and her family unreachable, Patricia was left to handle the situation alone. “I tried calling my mom, but she was busy and couldn’t answer,” Patricia recounts. Without help and unable to navigate the stairs due to the pain, she took matters into her own hands.

In a remarkable display of resourcefulness, Patricia prepared for childbirth in her room. “I heated water to sterilize the scissors and gathered pillows for support,” she recalls. As the pain intensified, she lay down and began to push. Fueled by adrenaline and sheer willpower, she pressed on until her baby was finally born. “It was a mix of fear and fierce determination,” she says. “When he came out, he cried—loudly and strongly. I even felt like he used his arms to help himself out, as if he gave me a little nudge. He was covered in slippery fluids, and then came the blood. After that, the placenta followed, just like that.”

Holding her newborn, Patricia was overwhelmed with a profound sense of relief and love.

As things began to calm down, Patricia took a closer look at her baby and checked for the baby’s gender. “From my initial check-up with the OB, we only used a heart monitor to rule out stillbirth since we were late for our appointment,” she explains. “We were supposed to go to a center in December where there was an ultrasound machine, but he came out earlier than expected. So I checked for myself—it’s a boy! Haha. I really wanted a girl, but he was so cute. His nose was so pointed at the time; I thought it was so different from mine, since I have a flat nose. He was as small as my stuffed bunny back then, but his grip was incredibly strong. And when I finally saw his eyes, I knew he had only one feature from me. He looked just like his daddy.”

The Reality of Solitude

The solitude Patricia experienced during childbirth was both daunting and empowering. “I was 19 and scared,” she admits. The absence of familiar faces and the need for reassurance were stark. Yet, this moment of isolation also fueled her determination to ensure her baby’s safe arrival. “I needed someone by my side, but my instinct drove me to do whatever it took,” she says. Patricia’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength that emerges in the face of overwhelming circumstances.

Bonding and Reflecting

After her baby was born, Patricia faced the challenge of bonding amidst fatigue and the struggle to breastfeed. “It was tough, but the love for my baby was instant,” she shares. The early days of parenthood were marked by adjustments and learning, but the joy of having her baby safe and sound was unparalleled.

A New Perspective on Family

Patricia’s experience transformed her relationships and family dynamics.
