Have you always had a problem with excessive sweating? Well, the intense heat we’ve been experiencing this summer can, sadly, aggravate this. While it might help to wear sleeveless tops all summer long, sweating profusely can still make us self-conscious.

Here are some ways to reduce underarm sweating to truly be confident and comfortable amid the summer heat.

1. Apply anti-perspirant before bed

Yes, you read that right. Swipe on anti-perspirant before you turn in instead of right before you step out of the house. According to Women’s Health, it’s best to apply anti-perspirant onto dry skin. Applying it at night, when you sweat less, will “plug in” the pores, lessening the chances of them overproducing sweat when you wake up. Check the label to know if the particular brand you are using requires reapplication in the morning.

2. Choose to wear natural fibers

The clothes you choose play a huge part in the amount of sweat you produce. Fabric like cotton and silk are breathable, allowing for proper circulation, thereby keeping the skin dry. Sweatproof undershirts, or even underarm liners, can also help greatly in sweat absorption.

3. Switch to a stronger product

If you’re regular anti-perspirant doesn’t seem to be working, try replacing it with a stronger brand, preferably a clinical strength product. According to livestrong.com, you should choose products with a high “active ingredient”, which is usually an aluminum-based ingredient.

4. Change your diet

Making dietary changes isn’t only effective at keeping weight gain at bay; it can also reduce underarm sweat. Thompson Tee recommends increasing your water intake and your consumption of water-dense fruits and veggies, like spinach, broccoli, and eggplants. Upping your intake of calcium-rich foods, sweet potatoes, bananas, oats, almonds, olive oil, and green tea could also help greatly.

5. Botox isn’t just for your face

When all else fails, consult your doctor. If you suffer from persistent excessive sweating that doesn’t seem to respond to remedies, you may have Hyperhidrosis, a treatable medical condition which manifests in excessive sweating of the armpits, hands, or feet.

Hyperhidrosis treatment includes several botox injections directly into your underarms, which has been found to result in an 82 to 87% reduction of sweating. It typically works 2 to 4 days after the first round of injections, but it commonly take two weeks for its effects to be truly felt.
