Simon Cowell on being a new father: “I thought my son hated me!”

In an appearance on Jimmy Fallon, the first-time dad confessed that he wasn't very good at fatherhood at first

In an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Simon Cowell opened up about fatherhood. Though he and his two-year-old song Eric now have a great relationship, the 56-year-old producer revealed that he initially struggled with being a first-time dad. He confessed that he thought being a dad would be easy. To be fair, Cowell did prepare for the role:

“I practiced by getting some puppies first. I thought I’d get two puppies so I’m used to looking after things… and Eric arrived six months later.”

Cowell was in for a shock when his baby arrived:

“I wasn’t good [at it] to begin with. I thought he was going to be like a puppy. You could throw things and he would run to you…”

He revealed that after 8 months, he told his partner, socialite Lauren Silverman, “I think he hates me.”

Thankfully, it all turned around for the X Factor judge in the end. “And then one day, I think he was watching me on TV, and then he kind of got me. And we sort of got this communication, and then he started talking to me, and now we’re buddies.”

“Now we’re buddies.”

Cowell and Fallon went on to compare their toddlers’ TV programming (Fallon’s daughters Winnie and Frances are 3 and 1, respectively). Cowell revealed that he is not a fan of Dora the Explorer, saying, “Dora’s gone on a long holiday, and has got lost and won’t be coming back.”

Peppa Pig, on the other hand, is good in Cowell’s book. “It only lasts 10 minutes which is good.”
