A blogger on youtube recently shared a video about the “worst day of his life” which documented a day that he spent with his 66-year-old mother who was suffering from dementia.

His heartbreaking video has been viewed over 2 million times.

“Do you know who my mother is?”

Joey Daley shot a video wherein he spent a day with his mother, who was suffering from a form of dementia called Lewy Body dementia.

In the video, he tells his mom, “The other night, you asked who my dad was.” To which his mother replied, “I know, I guess I never knew,” showing the extent of his mother’s dementia. It can clearly be seen on Joey’s face that he suddenly became sad after his mother forgot who he was.

Later on, he took his mother to a salon to get her hair done, and everything seemed fine. After the haircut however, when they were eating in a restaurant, Joey asked his mother the question, “Do you know who my mom is?” and her answer broke his heart.

“I just want you to be happy”

His mom responded with “No, I guess. I don’t know. Who is it?” she then said, “I have to think about it.”

He then asked his mother if she knew who he was, and how they met, to which she replied, “I don’t know.” He then kept asking her if she knew who he was, and she thought that he was just a friend, or someone that she met from school.

Joey is clearly devastated when he finds out that his mother’s dementia has made her forget that he is her son. But later on in their conversation, his mother says “I’m not worried, I just want you to be happy.”

Her statement shows that in spite of the fact that she’s having a hard time remembering the people in her life, deep in her heart, she still knows that Joey is her son, and all that he wants for him is his happiness.

At the end of the video, Joey can be seen breaking down in his car, finding it hard to believe that even his own mother, who he loves so much, has forgotten who he was. He said that “it felt like I lost my mother” when she failed to realize that she was spending the day with her son.

This just shows how devastating dementia can be, and how painful it is for a dementia sufferer’s loved ones to realize that the person they love and care about has seemingly forgot all about them.
