A two-year-old boy in Calinan, Davao City, whose mother is an OFW in Bahrain, died while in the care of his guardians on Sunday, November 13.
The alleged cause were injuries he sustained all over his body after he was beaten with a belt, according to ABS-CBN news.
Though the suspects–Sarah Jane Alcain and her husband Ronilo–denied killing the boy, they did admit to “disciplining him” using a belt after he urinated in his pants.
According to ABS-CBN news, the suspects rushed the toddler to the hospital at around 11 p.m. when they noticed he was having difficulty breathing, but unfortunately, he was declared dead on arrival.
The two suspects have been charged with “murder in relation to Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act”, police told ABS-CBN news.
Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio vowed to continue seeking justice for the young boy
Davao Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio vowed to continue seeking justice for the young boy.
“I already referred and endorsed that case. We have a special prosecutor for this kind of case,” she reassured reporters at a press conference, according to an ABS-CBN news report.
She also took time to urge Davao residents to call the Kean Gabriel Hotline (0908-818-4444), to report cases of child abuse.
“They can easily report it anonymously and we will just process the information from our end,” she continued. “So we can prevent another child abuse case.”
The Kean Gabriel Hotline was so named in memory of a 3-year-old boy who died after his dad stuffed him in a sack and beat him with a piece of wood.
Since they launched the hotline a month ago, 18 cases have been reported and they managed to rescue a 9-year-old boy.
