Hundreds of families have already evacuated
Due to the threats of flash floods and heavy rains throughout the region, a state of calamity has been declared in Cagayan de Oro City on the morning of January 16.
Additionally, PAG-ASA has also raised a red warning level on Northern Mindanao as well as the Zamboanga Peninsula.
On Monday evening, hundreds of families have already evacuated due to massive flooding. A number of public schools have been opened to act as evacuation centers for affected families.
A code red has also been placed on several barangays
In addition to the state of calamity declared in Cagayan de Oro city, a code red has been placed on several barangays due to the threat of flash floods and heavy rains.
The code red warning means that the barangays affected will have to undergo forced evacuation since their families would be in danger if they choose to stay.

Safety tips before, during, and after a storm
Being prepared for anything is very important, and as parents, it’s our responsibility to ensure the safety of our family. Here are some helpful safety tips that you can do during a storm:
- Stock up on important supplies such as clean water, canned goods, and medicine.
- Have flashlights handy, along with a battery operated radio. There are also hand-operated flashlights and radios that don’t need batteries to function.
- Keep yourself updated on the status of the storm.
- During the storm, it’s best to stay indoors, and wait for any updates or evacuation warnings.
- If flooding occurs inside your home, be sure to turn off the main power to prevent the risk of electrocution.
- Place all important items and documents in a waterproof container, and on high ground.
- If the flooding inside your home gets too high, you must evacuate. Make sure to prepare all of your important belongings beforehand so you can quickly evacuate.
- Once the storm is over, make sure to check your home for any damage, or if there are anything that needs to be reported to authorities, such as live wires, fallen posts, and electrical cables.
- Make sure to clean up after the storm, as any stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes that can harbor deadly diseases.
