A street food vendor from Baclaran was recently arrested for allegedly trying to ‘recycle’ his unsold tokneneng, as was seen in a viral video.
The vendor might be planning to resell the eggs
On the viral video, the vendor can clearly be seen taking the unsold tokneneng, placing them in a basin of water, and then washing off the orange batter off of the eggs.
What’s more unsettling is aside from the fact that he’s doing it out on the sidewalk which can contaminate the eggs, it doesn’t seem that he washed his hands, and he even placed the eggs inside a strainer under his cart.
The person who took the video said that the vendor might be planning to resell the eggs.
“Okay pa ‘yon, hindi pa sira.”
Because of the viral video, authorities decided to conduct an inspection of all the street food vendors in Baclaran. The man was eventually caught during the inspection, but he denies that he was planning to try and resell the eggs for human consumption.
He said that he was planning to sell the eggs as feed for pigs. He shares, “Okay pa ‘yon, hindi pa sira.”
According to city administrator Atty. Dean Soriano shares, “Itong mga manininda po natin, dapat makita nila kung ano ang nararapat na kalusugan para sa tao.”
Other vendors in the area added that what happened might affect their sales, as people might become suspicious of the food that they’re selling.

Just how safe is the food you buy?
A lot of Filipinos eat street food. It’s cheap, convenient, and readily available. However, street food can also be very unsafe since aside from the fact that it’s just being sold on the street, you can’t always be sure of the standards that the vendor has when it comes to handling the food.
Though, even food sold in fast food restaurants or other similar establishments can sometimes be unsafe, which is why it’s very important for parents to know what to look for when it comes to stale food.
- If the food has a foul smell, or tastes different than what you’re used to, it’s best to not eat it since the food might be stale.
- Check the surroundings first, if the area is dirty or if you see any insects or rats around, then it might not be a safe place to eat.
- When buying food from a supermarket, always check the expiration date, and make sure that the food container has no holes, or any sort of damage.
- When buying meat, make sure that it’s fresh, and that there’s no off smell.
- When it comes to fish, the meat should be firm, and there should be no fishy smell.
- Always buy your food from trusted sources, and make sure to wash your hands before eating.
