There’s a famous quote by Robert Baden-Powell, a founder of the scouting movement, that goes: “Leave this world a little better than you found it.” And it makes perfect sense, since as humans, we’re just co-existing in this world along with all of the other plants, animals, and creatures of the world.

That’s why it’s important for parents to teach their kids why they should care about the environment as well as take steps to make the world a much better place for the future generations.

The environment takes care of us

We might not always realize it, but without the environment, we won’t be able to exist. Nature provides us food, a means of shelter, the air we breathe, and the water we drink.

For hundreds of years, we’ve exploited nature through overfishing, illegal logging, polluting the rivers, hunting species to extinction, etc. all just to fuel our wants, and not our needs.

We won’t be able to survive if we keep on exploiting nature, so it’s important for future generations to learn from our mistakes so that they would be able to slowly nurse the environment back to the way it was.

Global warming wasn’t a big problem hundreds of years ago, but now we’re facing the negative impact that global warming has. Now we’re forced to make changes to try and fix our forefather’s mistakes, and we need to make sure that our kids won’t have to suffer from those mistakes.

It’s for the future generations

Can you imagine being alive during the time when dodos weren’t extinct? The loss of an entire species is extremely tragic, and what’s worse is that they died off due to hunting. Humans have the power to manipulate the environment, yet, a lot of people still choose to abuse that power instead of working with nature to improve our lives.

The environment isn’t just ours to use and abuse, we have to make sure that future generations have the chance to see the amazing animals that are alive right now, as well as marvel at the amazing sights that nature has to offer. By teaching the kids of today how to take care of the environment, we’ll stand a better chance of making things better.

Be a part of the change

Aside from sharing knowledge, it’s also important for families to take an active stance when it comes to taking care of the environment. There are a lot of activities such as tree planting, clean up drives etc. that would make a difference when it comes to the environment.

Any little step or action that we do makes a big impact, even if we can’t see it outright. And if everyone pitches in and makes a positive change for the environment, it will add up, and we’ll see a bigger, and more positive change in the environment.

So why not take some time to read about how we can make the world a better place, and share that information with your kids. Who knows, maybe someday future generations will look back and remember 2017 as “The year that the world decided to make a difference.” Wouldn’t that be a nice legacy for the future?
