1. Shouting at me for every little mistake I make is not “teaching,” it’s emotional abuse. I’m not perfect, neither are you, so stop expecting perfection.
2. Every failure I encounter makes me feel like a disappointment to you — and it kills me inside.
3. I’ve shaped my life as best I can to please you, like going to your school of choice and doing my best to be on the honor roll. Sometimes you say you’re proud of me, but honestly, I am not happy.
4. Every time you come near me or raise your hand, I’m afraid you’re going to hit me.
5. Calling me names like “stupid” or “lazy” is not okay.
6. Everything I’m passionate about is a “sideline” or “worthless” to you.
7. Everything I do veers to the benefit of the family or others in general. It’s a self-destructive selflessness and it’s eating away inside of me because I can’t think for and about myself without feeling guilty, ungrateful, or selfish.

8. I love you but I don’t like you. I don’t want to grow up to be like you.
9. Everyday I wake up knowing that I will be shouted at or put down. Every night I go to sleep feeling like a failure.
10. You push your ideals and beliefs down my throat and it makes me respect them less and less.
11. The amount of pressure you put on me is making me crumble.
12. I hate it when you compare me to other people. You say they’re better than me, smarter than me, better looking than me. In my head, you’re basically telling me that you wish they were your children instead of me.
13. I learned to hold grudges because of you, and the greatest grudge I have is my grudge against myself.
14. Because of you, I don’t like me.
15. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I told you all of this.
