For a lot of parents, their child’s first day at school can be difficult. Not only do they feel anxious about letting their child go off on their own, but all parents worry if their child can find friends and fit in.

‘Wonder’ tackles the story of a child named Auggie, who was born with a physical deformity that makes it hard for him to fit in with the other kids. While his parents push him to be confident and be proud of who he is, they also can’t help but worry about how the other kids in the school will treat their child.

During the first part of the trailer, Auggie’s parents, played by Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts, are worried that the other children might treat him badly because of what he looks like. However, through Auggie’s kind heart as well as his very supportive mom and dad, his classmates soon learn to look past his appearance and get to know him for who he really is, a kid just like everyone else.

One memorable line in the movie goes, “You can’t blend in when you were born to stand out,” and that basically sums up Auggie’s life. He might have been born with a deformity, but it shouldn’t stop him from pursuing his dreams and leading a normal life, just like everyone else.

Wonder is based on a bestselling novel by R.J. Palacio, who thought of writing the novel when an experience with her son noticing a disfigured little girl turned badly because of her actions. She then realized that through her book, she could perhaps change how society looks at people.
