For a mom, it’s very difficult to do your job if everyone’s giving their own opinions or criticizing you for every little thing that you do.

Here are 4 types of mom-shaming that all moms can relate to:

Being shamed by a complete stranger

Have you ever experienced being shamed by a complete stranger? Maybe you’re in the grocery, or in the mall, and your child is a bit rowdy, or they might have made a mess. Suddenly, a complete stranger comes up to you and scolds you or tells you that you’re not a good mother.

It’s hard to deal with unsolicited advice, especially since being a mother, you believe that what you’re doing is the best for your child. You can deal with this type of mom-shaming in two ways. First, you can simply ignore the person, and go on with your day. Second, you can be more open-minded and try to learn from what the stranger is telling you. Who knows, they might actually know what they’re doing.

Being shamed online

The internet and social media is notorious for being overly critical of mothers. You’ll see a lot of posts where moms are body-shamed, their parenting methods are criticized, and people judge them unjustly just because some people like criticizing others.

What’s the best solution? Take some time off from social media. If you need to keep in touch with your friends, just send them an email or a text message, or visit them directly! Social media can sometimes do more harm than good, and taking some time off can be good for you and your sanity.

Being shamed by another mom

Being shamed by another mom can be embarrassing, and is a blow to your self-esteem as a mom. The important thing to remember is to be open-minded and try to understand that some people really mean well they criticize you. Maybe they actually know what they’re talking about.

However, this doesn’t mean that you should simply tolerate it when other moms verbally abuse you. There’s a point where things can start to get very hurtful or destructive, and you don’t need that type of negativity in your life.

Being mom shamed by your own mother

This one’s something that most mothers have probably experienced themselves.

Of course your mother, or your mother-in-law has a lot of things to say when it comes to being a parent. The best way to deal with this would be to think objectively and try to understand that your mother or mother-in-law has a lot of experience that they can share with you.

However, some old-fashioned advice can be harmful to your child, such as putting your baby to sleep on their stomach. So when it comes to those things, kindly correct her.

Remember that your mother or mother-in-law is doing this because they’re genuinely concerned with your children, and because they care about your family. Don’t simply discount it as them trying to meddle or trying to make you look bad. Be open minded and deal with it in a mature way.
