7 Jul, 2015

Is Your Home Rainy Season Ready?

Is Your Home Rainy Season Ready?

Typhoon preparedness is very important, especially in the Philippines, which gets hit by several storms a year. Not sure what you should be stocking up on to prepare for rainy season? We’ve asked a few moms to share their typhoon checklist must-haves. Find out if you have all that you need to get by when the next storm comes along.
For Your Pantry and Kitchen

Mom Sammy Tan, stocks up on easy to prepare food like canned goods and instant noodles. Talia Basman, mother of 1, makes sure to have enough drinking water at home.

Things to have:

Drinking water Canned goods, Instant noodles, rice Bread, biscuits, crackers Ice A full LPG tank

TIP: If you use electric stoves at home, invest in a small burner that runs on butane tanks for emergency food preparation.

For Your First Aid Kit

Check that your kit contains these:

Alcohol Cotton & cotton swabs Bandages Betadine solution Mosquito repellent Calamine lotion Paracetamol Allergy medication Antibacterial ointment Burn ointment Extra medicine for asthma, diabetes, hypertension, and others as needed

TIP: Have all the medication that your family needs on hand. Mommy Katrina Santiago has several types of allergies, so she always has antihistamines. Pauline Espulgar, mom of 2, keeps calamine lotion ready to treat her kids’ mosquito bites.

In Case Of A Power Outage

New mom Camille Crespo keeps an emergency light ready in case of blackouts. Mom blogger Sally Yu always keeps extra batteries at home. Emiliana Sison keeps fully charged power banks ready, too.

Here is our blackout checklist:

Here is our list of things to have in case of power outages:

Emergency lamps Flashlights with batteries Rechargeable fans Portable radios Candles and matches Fully charged mobile phones A fully charged powerbank Extra batteries for gadgets Car charger Cash, as ATMs may not be available

TIP: Avoid opening your refrigerator and freezer once power is lost. This helps to keep the cold in longer, prolonging the freshness of the food inside.

For Floods and Emergency Evacuation

Donna Donor, a homeschooling mom of 1, lives in a flood-prone area. She transfers her car to higher ground when rains persist. In case of an emergency evacuation mommy Roxanne Santiago recommends keeping a "Go Bag”. Inside, she keeps a few pieces of clothing, food and milk, gadgets and chargers, and important documents like birth certificates and passports. Cheryl Goodman makes sure that her twin daughters know the Family Emergency Plan – where to go, what to do, and who to call.

Make floods and evacuation less stressful with this typhoon checklist:

Keep important documents, a charged mobile phone, a flashlight and batteries in a waterproof bag. Move your vehicle to higher ground. Turn off circuit breakers and gas lines before evacuating. Prepare a "Go Bag”. Have a Family Emergency Plan.

TIP: Looking for a budget-friendly alternative to a waterproof bag? Use Ziploc bags instead!

Keeping Your Kids Happy And Your Pets Safe

Keeping Your Kids Happy And Your Pets Safe

Work-at-home mom of 4, Millie Manahan, keeps her children occupied during class suspensions by having board games for them to play with. Wap Martinez also gives her 2-year old daughter some books and art materials to keep her busy.

Pets may find typhoons frightening, and keeping them safe should be part of your typhoon checklist. Jehn Domingo makes sure to house their pets in a safe area before the storm hits. She also stocks up on food for the pets.

For the kids: Board games Coloring books Art materials Books and magazines Educational toys Card Games

For the pets: Shelter Food TIP: Encourage your children to entertain themselves during a storm without the use of electronic gadgets.
